Dr. Z.S. Meharwal is the Executive Director and Head of Cardiac Surgery, Heart Transplantation, and VAD Program at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, where he is a founding team member. With over 30 years of experience in cardiac surgery, Dr. Meharwal has performed more than 30,000 surgeries, including complex heart operations and Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) procedures. He is a pioneer of numerous innovative cardiac operations in India and is deeply involved in teaching and training as the Programme Director of DNB Cardiothoracic Surgery at Fortis Escorts. Many of his trainees now work as independent cardiac surgeons worldwide. Dr. Meharwal is frequently invited as faculty at national and international conferences and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. He has received numerous awards, including the President's Award for his contributions to cardiac surgery, the Citation Award by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Meeting in 2002, the Saharanpur Aditya Samman by the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 2005, and an entry in the Limca Book of Records in 2008 for performing a coronary artery bypass surgery on a 94- year-old patient, the oldest to undergo this procedure. He is a member of several prestigious organizations, including the Indian Association of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeons, the Cardiological Society of India, the Asian Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, and the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery.
