Dr. Prof. Rela is an internationally renowned leader in liver transplantation both in India and worldwide. He has been leading this field for more than 31 years and has spearheaded many advancements. Currently, Dr. Rela is a professor at King’s College Hospital in London. He is one of the world’s leading surgeons and the author of more than 400 scientific papers focused on liver transplantation and complex hepatobiliary pancreatic surgery. More than 4,000 times, Rela has personally performed liver transplants.
In 1997, Dr. Rela made a landmark breakthrough as the first person to lead a liver transplant of a five-day-old infant, which he did in December, and which the Guinness Book of World Records included in 2000. The patient is now in her twenties and is seeking to become a lawyer.
With the split liver transplantation technique, pioneered by Dr. Rela, one cadaver liver can now serve two recipients. 'Top Masters in Healthcare Administration' lists him as one of the most innovative pediatric surgeons.
Today, Dr. Rela is Chairman & MD of Dr Rela Institute & Medical Centre, Chennai. He is a Professor of Liver Surgery and Transplantation, at King’s College Hospital NHS Trust and Course Director of Post MCh Fellowship in Liver Transplantation at Dr. MGR Medical University, Tamil Nadu. He is the President-Elect of the International Liver Transplant Society, 2021 and member, Executive Council, Living Donor Liver Transplantation Study Group India, 2021.
