Overview

Dr. Prof. Mohamed Rela is a highly esteemed figure in liver transplantation in India and worldwide. With over 31 years of experience, he is a pioneer in the field, renowned for his expertise. Currently a professor at King's College Hospital in London, Dr. Rela is recognised globally for his contributions to liver transplant surgery.

He is among the world's most accomplished surgeons, with over 400 scientiflc publications covering liver transplantation, complex hepatobiliary pancreatic surgery, and other related topics. Dr. Rela has personally performed more than 4000 liver transplant procedures.

In a milestone achievement in December 1997, Dr. Rela led a team that successfully transplanted a liver into a five-day-old girl, a feat acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2000. Today, she is a law student in her twenties.

Dr. Rela pioneered split liver transplantation, a technique where one cadaver liver is divided and transplanted into two recipients. He is also recognised as one of the most innovative pediatric surgeons in an article by 'Top Masters in Healthcare Administration.'

Currently, Dr. Rela serves as the Chairman & Managing Director of the Dr. Rela Institute & Medical Centre in Chennai. He holds the position of Professor of Liver Surgery and Transplantation at King's College Hospital NHS Trust in London and serves as the Course Director for the Post MCh Fellowship in Liver Transplantation at Dr MGR Medical University, Tamil Nadu. In 2021, he was President-Elect of the International Liver Transplant Society and remains an Executive Council Member of the Living Donor Liver Transplantation Study Group in India.
